Conclusion

The Refugee Crisis of 1865 at Brunswick Town/ Fort Anderson was a short-lived but impactful series of events that gave a minority group a chance for freedom, established new laws and government programs, and greatly diversified Wilmington’s population.  While some suffered immense tragedies that should not be forgotten, those who were able to escape, join Sherman’s army, and travel to Wilmington found a new life waiting for them.  While they were not free from hardship, they were able to establish homes, families, and build communities that would withstand through generations.  Descendants still live in the area and have created local communities to embrace their heritage and spread knowledge to the surrounding areas.

Unfortunately, several of these historical areas are no longer available for public access; however, by visiting Fort Anderson/Brunswick Town, pieces of their history will never be lost.
